Urbandale is a Des Moines, Iowa suburb of nearly 40,000 residents known for its high-achieving schools, thriving economy and low crime rate. Urbandale, which has grown by more than 30 percent this decade, was named by Money Magazine in 2007 as one of “America’s Best Small Cities.”
The City of Urbandale operates under the council-manager form of government. The City Council consists of 5 members elected at-large to 4-year overlapping terms. The Mayor is also elected to a 4-year term and presides over all Council meetings but does not vote. The last City Manager was in the position for 25 years.
The City has an annual operating budget of $35 million, a five-year Capital Improvement Program of $162 million and a AA2 bond rating. The City has a total of 175 full-time employees in nine departments.
The minimum job requirements are: 1) a Bachelor’s degree in public administration, finance or a related field with a Masters degree in public administration or a related field preferred; and 2) at least 6 years of local government management experience.
