Job Description:

CITY OF FORT WORTH, TEXAS

Police Chief

(Highly Competitive Compensation Package with Beginning Salary Negotiable DOQ)

Fort Worth is the fastest growing large U.S. city this decade. It anchors the west end of the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. Fort Worth, with a current population of 696,165, plays a major role in the continued economic development success of the dynamic Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex with its 5.7 million population. Fort Worth is the seat of Tarrant County but is located in both Tarrant and Denton Counties. The City covers 332 square miles and is projected to add 10 square miles and 107,000 residents in the next 5 years.

Fort Worth is a charter city which operates under the council/manager form of government. The City Council consists of a Mayor elected at-large and an 8-member City Council elected from districts. The Council appoints a City Manager who is responsible for administering and coordinating municipal operations and programs. The City highly values professionalism, effectiveness and efficiency in its municipal government and is frequently recognized for its excellence. The City has won 45 awards alone within the last year.

The Police Chief reports to the City Manager through the First Assistant City Manager. The Fort Worth Police Department (FWPD), with its highly successful neighborhood policing program, is exceptionally well respected and supported by the community. In 1995, voters approved and continue to support a ½ cent sales tax specifically dedicated to support crime control and prevention. FWPD employs 1539 sworn officers and 432 civilian employees and functions on a current budget of $207.4 million. FWPD has a capable and cohesive management team and capable employees and enjoys good employee relations, teamwork and morale throughout. FWPD has been using the Compstat management and accountability system for the past five years.

Any combination of experience that would likely provide the required knowledge is qualifying. A typical qualifying background would be eight years of increasingly responsible experience in municipal police work including four years of management and supervisory experience (at a level no less than two ranks below the Police Chief) gained in a community with a population of at least 200,000 and a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited school in police science, criminal justice, public administration or closely related field. A Master’s degree is preferred. Strongly prefer experience with a police department serving a diverse community comparable to Fort Worth, experience in initiating and overseeing community policing and crime prevention programs and experience working with police unions. Must be a collaborative team-player with proven ability to maintain and increase rapport and trust within FWPD and between the FWPD and the community. Must be technically current and meet State law enforcement certification requirements.
