Job Description:

Boca Raton is located on Florida's "Gold Coast" and is the southernmost city of Palm Beach County. Boca Raton is forty miles north of Miami and midway between the cities of Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale. It is bordered on the east by the Atlantic Ocean with five miles of ocean frontage. The City encompasses about twenty-nine square miles and has a population of about 100,000.

Boca Raton utilizes the Council-Manager form of government. Accordingly, four Council Members and a Mayor are elected at large on a non-partisan basis for three-year terms. The City Council determines policy, adopts legislation, approves the City's budget, sets taxes, and fees, and appoints the City Manager, City Attorney and members of various Boards and Commissions. The City Manager is responsible for directing the business of the City and its various departments. The City has about 1,600 full time employees and about 200 part time employees. The City’s current operating budget is $563,857,600.

Boca Raton provides a full range of outstanding municipal services including, police, fire protection and rescue services; an extensive recreation program which includes beaches, pools, golf courses, libraries, tennis courts, neighborhood parks, athletic facilities, and community centers; Municipal Services which provides traffic, facility and street maintenance, solid waste collection and storm water services; Utility Services which provides water and sewer services and Development Services which provides planning, zoning and building permit and inspection services. The City also provides general administrative services which include Financial Services, City Clerk, Risk Management, Parking Enforcement, Economic Development, Human Resources, and Information Technology.

The Deputy City Manager, as a member of the executive team, assists the City Manager in managing and directing the overall administrative activities and operations that support the mission and strategic objectives of the City. He or she performs a wide variety of complex professional and responsible work related to the operation and administration of City functions and activities. Assigned work includes planning, organizing, and directing activities among and with departments, fostering collaboration and teamwork, self-directed problem solving, and serving as a mentor/coach to City staff. The job requires working closely with diverse public and private organizations, citizen groups, and community businesses on a variety of projects.

The individual in this role will provide management and coordination of internal services such as finance, procurement, information technology, and human resources and/or functions that focus on external services such as public safety, planning and development, recreation, and municipal services. The oversight of operations will depend on the talents and backgrounds of the executive team.

Requirements include a bachelor’s degree in Public Administration or appropriate field. A Master’s Degree in Public Administration, Business Administration or related field is preferred.

Significant related senior level management experience in local government (five years minimum, more than 7 years preferred).





SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a valid State of Florida class “E” driver’s license. Position requires being available 24 hours a day and is deemed an essential employee required to work during emergency situations.
