Job Description:

With a growing population of 72,000, Flagstaff is home to Northern Arizona University and the world-famous Lowell Observatory and Museum of Northern Arizona. The community which is nestled at the base of the San Francisco Peaks (elevation 12,633 feet) is surrounded by the Coconino National Forest which is the largest ponderosa pine forest on earth.

The City which has a home-rule charter has operated under the Council/Manager form of government since 1958. The City Council consists of seven members including the Mayor. The City Council appoints the City Manager who serves as the City’s Chief Executive. There have been three City Managers appointed in the last 22 years not counting interim appointments.

The City Manager has two principal deputies that oversee the City’s twelve divisions and sections. The City has an annual budget of $326 million, a five-year capital improvement budget of $302 million and 865 fulltime equivalent in personnel. The City is a full-service-plus organization that provides an airport, cemetery, convention and visitors bureau, and water, reclaimed water, water pollution control and storm water utilities in addition to traditional municipal public safety services such as police and fire.

The minimum job requirements are: 1) graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in public administration, business, or management; and 2) extensive administrative and management experience clearly demonstrating the ability to direct the activities of a municipal government; or any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the minimum job requirements as determined by the City.
