Job Description:

The City of Boca Raton is seeking an experienced land use, planning, zoning and code administration professional for the position of DEVELOPMENT SERVICES DIRECTOR. This highly responsible executive level position reports to the Deputy City Manager and is responsible for the administration and management of all Departmental activities related to the City’s comprehensive plan, long-range and current planning, zoning administration, growth management, building code administration, and community improvement activities. The position has oversight of 77 full-time employees, numerous consulting contracts, and budget administration. The Development Services Director is a key member of the City’s executive team.

The successful candidate will possess extensive knowledge in all areas of planning, redevelopment, and land use. They will have excellent team building skills, be politically astute and have the ability to build consensus. The Director is responsible for recommending and implementing initiatives that promote redevelopment and internal process improvement. They will promote orderly growth that focuses on livability, sustainability, and revitalization that will maintain Boca Raton’s enviable quality of life.

One of the City’s high strategic priorities is the continued streamlining and simplification of the development review and building permit processes. The Development Services Director will have responsibility for the oversight and implementation of these key strategic initiatives. The City is largely built out, and the Director will be responsible for effectively managing change so that redevelopment is in alignment with the City’s vision.

The ideal candidate will possess a Master’s Degree in Urban Planning or related field, AICP certification, and a minimum of seven years’ experience in the following areas: long-range and current planning; land development regulation principles and practices. The ideal candidate will have also have experience in the development and administration of codes and ordinances, strong leadership skills and experience in redevelopment and revitalization. General knowledge of code enforcement systems and processes and knowledge of Florida Growth Management Laws is desirable.
