CHIEF OF CORRECTIONS
Salary Range: $87,090 to $139,568; beginning salary negotiable

Orange County, Florida, seated in Orlando, has 13 cities and covers over 1,000 square miles. The County operates under a charter which provides for a directly elected Chairman (CEO) and a six-member County Board (Legislative) elected from single member districts. With the consent of the Board, the Chairman appoints a County Administrator who is responsible for managing the daily activities of many County departments and divisions, including the Orange County Office of Public Safety. This Office, which includes Corrections, Fire Rescue and Communications, is headed by the Director of Public Safety. The Orange County Corrections Department’s (OCCD) jail system is the 4th largest in Florida. It has a design capacity for 4,105 inmates. OCCD is also one of only 124 jails in the United States to be certified by the American Correctional Association. OCCD employs 1,849, has a FY 2006-07 budget of $136 million and serves 22 police agencies. The Chief of Corrections reports to the Director of Public Safety and is responsible for overall management of the Orange County Corrections System.

Requires a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice/Public Administration or a related field and a Master's degree in Public Administration or a related field, and seven (7) years of experience in an urban correctional environment with at least five (5) years at a management level; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities to include excellent management and leadership skills, cutting edge knowledge of modern corrections methods, facilities, construction and technology, and excellent written and verbal skills, including community and media relations.

Must obtain Florida State Certification as a correctional officer within one year of appointment to the position and must continue to maintain certification while in the position. Must possess or acquire and maintain a State of Florida Class "E" drivers’ license.
