Valdosta, Georgia, distinguished as the “Azalea City” and as “A City Without Limits”, is also known for its thriving business community, a superb educational system, affordable housing and endless opportunities for recreation, entertainment and the arts. Valdosta is located in the coastal plain of Georgia about 230 miles south of Atlanta and 230 miles north of Orlando, FL. The City’s 2010 population was 54,518. It covers 37 square miles.
Valdosta operates under the Council/Manager form of government with an elected Mayor and seven elected council members. Accordingly, the City relies on a professional city manager for all the daily operational functions while the Mayor/Council is charged with setting policy. Valdosta employs approximately 600 FTE’s and provides a full range of municipal services through various administrative and operating departments. City employees are not unionized.
The Human Resources Director is responsible to the City Manager for the overall management and strategic planning of the City’s centralized, full-service human resources department. Assigned functions include policy development, recruitment, benefits, classification, compensation, training, grievance resolution, risk management including safety compliance, workers’ compensation and general liability claims resolution. The Human Resources Director also assists in the management of a self-insured health plan to include coordination and supervision of an employee health clinic and associated wellness programs. He or she conducts research, prepares requests for proposals and presents major policy matters to City Council.
Minimum requirements are a Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources Management, Public Administration or a related field plus at least seven (7) years of recent professional human resources experience (local government experience preferred) to include at least five (5) years of supervisory experience. PHR/SPHR or IPMA-CP certification is preferred. Competitive salary with an excellent benefits package.
